The Game Malmö

A world-class game attraction, in the heart of Malmö

In recent years, work has been underway to explore the idea of creating a world-class game focused attraction in Malmö, to complement the rapidly expanding gaming industry in Malmö.

After two previous feasibility studies, Malmö city and stakeholders such as Atrium-Ljungberg, Skanska and Massive Entertainment decided to proceed with an in-depth feasibility study to build on the Nordic Game Experience concept. As the regional organization for game development, Game Habitat took ownership of the process. This would result in a concept description and a business concept based on the concept.

Based on this, the concept The Game Malmö was created, which is presented partly as a visionary, visual presentation with sketches, partly an operating budget and partly this report as is a summary of the work and a description of the process.

The Game Malmö is specified as a meeting place and an experience center for the gaming world’s users, producers, and stakeholders.

Community update (Covid-19)

Dear community,

These are trying and tumultuous times. Covid-19 is causing large scale disruption of societies throughout the world, affecting all of our daily lives.

The game industry is as far as we can tell, doing it’s best to keep calm and carry on, with many studios adapting and sending people home to work remotely. Still, we’re seeing canceled trade shows and delays of both hardware and game releases as a result of the virus. On a positive note people seem to be playing more games, with Steam reporting an all-time high of concurrent users on their platform, likely due to people staying at home.

Game Habitat is also working remotely for the time being and will be supporting our community in the best way we can.

Events that were planned for the spring will be postponed or moved online.

DevHub is in operation, but is closed for external visitors.

We recommend all of our community members to join the Game Habitat Community Discord server where we can share news, updates and resources, and support each other.

Please follow the guidelines set by the authorities, enact social distancing to the best of your ability and remember that this is temporary and that we will get through it together.

Expect more updates from us as things develop.

Stay safe,

The Game Habitat team

Announcing Game Habitat

It’s time for a change.

After spending the past few years establishing Game City as the hub for game development in southern Sweden the time has come for us to take the next important step on our journey.

Our mission is to establish southern Sweden as the best possible environment for everything and everyone related to game development. We want to put our region on the map of everyone who’s looking to advance their career as game developers, start up their own studio or who’s looking for a world class game education.

Thanks to greatly increased funding from Malmö Stad and Region Skåne, as well as the immense support from the local game development community, we’re now better equipped than ever before to make this a reality.

However, we feel that our current name is no longer representative of who we are and what we’re striving towards.

Our name should clearly reflect our mission, represent our community and help us tell the story of what we’re creating here in southern Sweden.

That’s why we’re announcing today that we’re changing our name from Game City Southern Sweden to Game Habitat Southern Sweden.

Why Game Habitat?

If you look up the word habitat in a dictionary you get the following:

  1. the natural environment of an organism; place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism:
  2. the place where a person or thing is usually found

As in, southern Sweden is the habitat for game developers, which is precisely what we’re working towards creating for all of you.

So there you have it! As of now we’re going by the name Game Habitat Southern Sweden, which you’ll find to be reflected across all of our channels as of this week.

We’re here.

Say hi and keep up to date with our events and activities by following us here.
