Lucas Rundle

  • Name: Lucas Rundle
  • Age: 26
  • From: London, UK, but now living in Malmö, Sweden
  • Enjoying: Running, biking, playing basketball, and “hide away in my cave playing video games”
  • Profession: Talent Acquisition Specialist at IO Interactive

What is your background?

“I have been working in video games recruitment for three and a half years now, and it’s safe to say I have really found my calling in life. Its such a pleasure that this industry is growing so much, and it creates room for those who haven’t studied or excelled in arts, programming, design etc, and can still be a part of creating these amazing games. I worked first at Datascope recruitment in London, which gave me a good understanding of the industry, and now at IOI I have learnt so much about internal production, its been a fantastic behind the curtain experience.”

Why did you start working in the game industry?

“Getting into game development has been a lifetime goal I never even knew I set myself. I have played games since before I could walk, with my first notable playthroughs being Ocarina of time and Ratchet & Clank on PS2. Ironically, 20 years later, those are still two of my favourite games. I never studied for being in this industry, but a lifetime of passion certainly helped. If you had told a younger version of myself that I would be inside a games company working alongside the rockstars who have worked on so many titles from my days as a gamer, I would never have believed you. “

How has working in the industry been for you?

“Informative! I have now seen just how much effort and dedication goes into these productions and have found a whole new level of respect for everyone in this industry. I have felt welcomed from day one and I think that stems from a passion for the subject matter. I would like to think my colleagues resonate with the fact that I really do care about the people I try to bring in, as I want to not only build a great working environment here through the people we hire, but also help contribute to the projects through recruitment as best as I can. There have been some challenges, such as wrapping my head around some of the technical requirements for certain roles (cough, programming), but overall its been a welcoming and rewarding experience.”

What is a day in your work life like?

“A day in the life of a recruiter varies! Some days I might be meeting a candidate off site, attending an event, preparing offers to send out to candidates, or syncing with the hiring team on a certain role. My actual favourite part of my job is usually walking around to stretch my legs, talking with animators, level designers, programmers etc, and getting them to show me new things they have been working on. It’s also super fun testing out new stuff and even put my input in! It’s so flattering that even as a recruiter on the outside, the developers are curious to hear what we think and encourage us to test out the games.”

“It wouldn’t have been as nearly an enjoyable experience if I didn’t get to work alongside such gems day in day out.”

What’s best with your job?

“The short answer is – the people. Moving to a new country is quite a daunting thing, especially when you haven’t done it before, but the people in this industry, and more specifically, at this studio, have made the experience just fly by. I’m not so far away two years in Sweden, and it wouldn’t have been as nearly an enjoyable experience if I didn’t get to work alongside such gems day in day out. Also being a part of Project 007 and our unannounced title fills me with such excitement and motivation!”

How would you advise others that want a job like yours to pursue it?

“If you are currently in recruitment and looking to go internal/into games, then a cover letter and written explanation of what is drawing you into the industry would go a long way! Most of the time studios are looking for recruiters who can be great ambassadors and care about the team they are expanding, so if you are passionate, considerate, and in love with the games industry, then this could be an amazing career to pursue.”

The #WeMakeGames interview series allow individuals in the game industry to tell their story, about their current work, how they got to where they are and why they believe the games industry is such an enjoyable industry to work in. We move beyond programmers and level designers, to showcase the wide range of roles making up the studios creating some of the world’s best games – right here in south Sweden!
