Happy holidays!

Year in review 2022

This past year was amazing for many reasons, here are some of our highlights:

  • We welcomed five new members to the Game Habitat family: Hero3D, Cross Reality, What Are Birds, Undone Games, and Linbasta
  • We conducted a unique mapping of the region’s industry
  • We – all of Malmö’s game development industry – received Malmö Stad’s Malmö Ambassador Award at Malmö Business Gala
  • Three more terms of the pilot project GameSWE – Swedish for game developers, in the books, more than 90 developers from nine studios have taken part to learn Swedish and make new friends
  • The project Game Accelerate South Sweden (GASS) have run several activities supporting primarily new game studios, for example: Game Startup Boostcamp, Mentorship Café, Support Network, and B2B in games roundtable together with Dataspelsbranschen – which laid the foundation of a new Game B2B database currently being developed
  • We launched a campaign website and promo reel as part of a new effort to attract more talent and studios to the region
  • We brought several studio with us and went to Gamescom in Cologne
  • We organized Visual Novel Jam and Moxie Jam as part of our effort to get more young people interested in pursuing a career in games
  • We organized Spelkunnighetsdagen (Game Awareness Day), this year focusing on game awareness, games as a cultural expression, and how games can be used as part of education in schools
  • We organized many, many other events! Highlights include:
    • The first Game Developer Meetup after the lifted corona restrictions (yes, those were lifted just this year – time flies!) was a huge hit, the 500 tickets were gone in a flash
    • GEM week – a full week of events around the International Women’s Day, to highlight diversity, inclusion and equality in games
    • The Annual Brännboll & BBQ in Slottsparken were also a hit – congratulations to Team Tarsier for taking home the trophy
  • Out team keeps growing, in February we added Erik Sundberg as the Communications Manager, and just now in December, Matti Suoraniemi joined as an Operatios Coordinator
  • Last but not least, we have updated our brand! The three mascots in the season’s greetings image are part of it. We’ll roll out the brand next year – keep an eye out!

Coming up in 2023

We have many exciting things to look forward to next year, here are some that we can spoil already:

  • DevHub will be expanding – more office space will therefore be available
  • GEM is launching a mentorship program
  • We’re taking part in BSG-GO, a new EU funded project with 12 European partners
  • We’re hosting Moxie Jam, 3-5 March
  • We’re hosting an event on the games industry’s climate impact, 29 March
  • We’ll launch an updated Game Habitat website
  • We’ll host a multitude of events, such as Game Developer Meetups, GEM week, mentorship cafés and roundtables
  • We’ll attend some amazing games industry events, and we’re hoping to bring many of our friends – you! – from the community with us
  • We’ll keep growing our team to be able to joggle the many initiatives and needs in the community

Stay tuned in 2023 for updates!
